A sheltered gypsy girl, deaf and mute, journeys to a distant land to find adventure. But when tragedy throws her off course, she begins to doubt everything about her purpose.

Ionna has long been fascinated with the visits from Petar, the Traveler. She and her people, both deaf and mute, have been hiding for generations in a remote forest. Unlike her sheltered life, Petar has journeyed to places she can scarcely imagine. His tales of adventure intrigue her, as does the special staff he carries that he hopes will one day bring him back to the girl he loves.
After one such visit, Ionna discovers that Petar has left his staff behind. Taking this as the perfect excuse to flee the confines of her tiny society, she determines to do whatever it takes to reunite Petar with his staff—and perhaps find her own adventure at the same time.
But as Petar always says, “The journey itself overshadows the destination.”
