Substantive Edit
A writer’s relationship with their editor is key to a writer’s success. An editor should teach and polish–and never remove an author’s voice. An editor should point out a writer’s strengths, and should never be curt or condescending about their weaknesses.
A substantive edit is a combination of line editing and the kind of feedback a writer gets from a great critique partner. Making sentences flow, pointing out overused words or cliches, analyzing dialogue, and catching inconsistencies in setting and character description. This edit catches typos and punctuation errors, but does not replace a good proofread after changes are made.
